Hearing Loss and Dizziness - Bangkok Hospital Pattaya

Hearing Loss and Dizziness

The ear is a very important organ. There is a complex process of picking up sound and balance, which helps us stay erect when standing, know where we are in relation to gravity, and help us walk, run, and move without falling.
Hearing loss causes problems with both loudness and sound distortion. The problem can greatly impact a person's quality of life when communication missing.
Dizziness, vertigo, sensation of spinning, nausea or vomiting, vertigo, ringing in one ear or tinnitus (chronic ringing in the ears) is a disturbance of the inner ear mainly, but in few cases can be lesion in the brain. If hearing loss is suspected, it is important to seek advice from a doctor specializing in diseases and conditions of the ear.
Hearing loss and Dizziness can be a symptom of inner ear infection, cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure hypercholesterolemia or anemia, reaction to some drugs, and other potential problems like noise. If a hearing loss exists in children, the child does not get the full benefit of language learning experiences can caused delay speech and language problem or may not be able to achieve language at all and become deaf.

How does the ear work?
The ear is comprised of three sections: the outer, middle and inner ear. The outer ear and ear canal work as an amplifier funneling sound down through it, so subsequent sound vibrations can then pass through the middle ear which is also comprised of multiple parts.
The middle ear consists of the ear drum, hammer (malleus), anvil (incus) and stirrup (stapes). Each of these parts is connected to each other and is made up of tiny bones, flexible tissue or both.
Most of the inner ear works like a fluid-filled chamber. The two major areas, the hearing past are the cochlea and semi-circular shaped canals the balance past. This portion of the ear sends the nerve impulses to the brain.
When a sound enters the ear, it goes through the ear canal to the middle ear. The sound waves cause portions of the middle ear to vibrate, which in turn make the fluid in the inner ear pass over many tiny 'hairs' and nerve endings located there. The hairs and nerves in this region help the brain differentiate the sounds into meaningful pattern of word. The balance help people retain their equilibrium whole moving.
Proper ear function may be decreased by injury, defect or disease bacterial or even viral infections, cholesteatoma and vestibular neuronitis. This can caused conductive and sensorineural hearing loss and balance problem. If you have a problem with your ears, it does not always mean you have a defect or disease. Something as simple as ear wax can severely impair someone's ability to hear sound and understand a conversation clearly. Anyhow in few cases you may have serious problem like a brain tumour.

Early detection and early management is a key issue
Diseases and conditions that may cause hearing loss and deafness
1. Ear canal atresia
2. Impacted ear wax
3. Infection of ear canal
4. Perforated ear drum
5. Otitis Media-Middle ear infection
6. Obstruction of Auditory tube that regulate the middle pressure ear to the atmosphere (tubes that ventilate the middle ears)
7. M?ni?re's disease-the disease of inner ear
8. Schwannoma, Tumor of the vestibular-cochlea nerve
9. Abnormal Circulation of the inner ears and brain
10. Ageing Hearing Loss can be preventable

Common Ear Diseases that need to seek help

  • Meniere's disease or syndrome is a condition characterized by hearing impairment, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and periodic vertigo (disturbance of balance and equilibrium). If not treated can causes disable of hearing and balance.
  • Sudden Sensor Neural Hearing loss (SSNHL) is defined as a loss greater than 30 dB hearing reduction, over at least three contiguous frequencies, occurring over a period of 3 days or less. It may be noticed instantaneously or develops over a period of hours or days. The severity of the hearing loss however varies from one patient to another and only one ear is usually affected.
  • Schwannoma is a tumor originating from the Schwann cells sheet which produce the insulating myelin sheath which covers peripheral nerves, usually at the connection to menages - in practical of inner ear it is originate from Vestibular Nerve and give pressure effect to hearing nerve. This will cause progressive unilateral Sensor Neural Hearing loss. Vestibular disturbance may not be prominent. It is a common tumor and it not detected early enough can extend to the brain and caused brain tumors.
  • Hearing Loss resulting from physical diseases
  • Many physical diseases may cause hearing loss including Diabetes Mellitus, high blood pressure, high fats, renal failure, goiter, and thyrotoxicosis.
