47 Trillion Dollars down the drain by Dr. Iain Corness

The heading of 47 Trillion Dollars down the drain looks as if I am about to discuss the American budget or Pattaya’s next mega-project, but I’m not. That figure is the amount of money the five leading non-communicable diseases costs the world. That figure, by the way, came from the World Economic Forum (WEF), that body of people who are employed to do the world maths.

That, of course, is just the monetary angle. Currently 36 million people a year die from these non-communicable diseases, and if we keep on going the way we are, this should rise to 52 million by 2030. Now think back to SARS, Bird Flu, Swine flu and the like – how many people died in those “epidemics”? Answer: nowhere near 36 million.

The five leading non-communicable diseases are Cancer, Diabetes, Mental illness, Heart disease and Respiratory disease. And you personally know people with at least three of those. Frightening.
The sad part of all this is the fact that many non-communicable diseases are preventable. You do not need to add your name to the list of this year’s 36 million.

Diabetes, Heart disease and Respiratory disease can be averted, and even if the disease is not now apparent, there are check-ups which can be done which will predict future problems, so that treatment can begin early.
Of course, if Sir Francis Drake hadn’t brought tobacco to England to trade in 1573, that disease profile would be totally different. 438 years too late now, but not too late for you to stop.
What is even more insidious regarding Sir Frank’s trading commodity is that the incidence of all cancers, not just lung cancers, is higher in smokers than it is in non-smokers. And that’s a fact.
An amazing situation where one of society’s cultural ‘habits’ ends up costing the world 47 Trillion Dollars. There is a message in all this. For everyone’s sake, stop smoking today.
