“Superbugs” and safety in Medical Tourism.

Once again there are horror headlines in some sections of the western press, claiming that patients are returning infected with “superbugs” after treatment in Indian hospitals.  The inference being that there is too much risk in having medical procedures in countries other than your own.

Not another sale! By Dr. Iain Corness

It takes a special kind of person to be able to be a salesman. I have tried twice in my life, and failed miserably each time.

The first was when I was a medical student. A starving medical student. You see, I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, in fact, when I think back, I didn’t even get a spoon!

With World No Tobacco Day on May 31, if nothing else it jogged my memory about giving up cigarettes.

1st issue on May 2010: At what age do you no longer bounce? by Dr. Iain Corness
We have to keep a box of ‘Band-Aids’ at home. Not the small, put in your pocket size, but a large industrial pack which could cover the cut thumbs of the entire workforce of the Eastern Seaboard. The reason is my six year old daughter.

1st issue on April 2010: The Breadwinner or the Homemaker - who is more important? by Dr. Iain Corness
To celebrate the King’s birthday, the hospital offers individual check-up packages at around 50 percent discount at the end of each year. Many people in Pattaya wait for the announcement and come charging in to book their check-ups at that time, and with discounts like that, why not?

1st issue on March 2010: Getting Stoned! by Dr. Iain Corness
Relax, I am not advocating the use of ‘bongs’ and funny tomato plants. I am referring to the increase in kidney stones experienced at this time of year.
With the annual dreadful Songkran just around the corner, one’s attention turns to avoiding getting doused, but it is the water we drink, not the water splashed, that is the greater problem. And it isn’t the quality of the water we drink, it is the volume, or lack of it.

1st issue on February 2010: St. Valentine's Day and chocolate hearts by Dr. Iain Corness
In the lead up to St. Valentine’s Day (the patron saint of chocolates) it has been a bad month. Cadbury’s, the makers of real milk chocolates for over 100 years were bought by the Kraft people, makers of real synthetic cheese. Cadbury’s were martyred on the altar of commercial interests. (As an aside, the Pattaya Mail’s Ms. Hillary went into a decline for several weeks at the news and had to be revived with copious amounts of French champagne, I am told.)

1st issue on January 2010: Practice makes perfect? by Dr. Iain Corness
I asked our Heart Center the other day, just how many stents they had placed in blocked coronary arteries in 2009. The answer was 182. Approximately that number of people died in Thailand in 2009 from the H1N1 swine flu and the news was treated like an unnatural disaster. So as opposed to the H1N1 figures, I suppose we could say we ‘saved’ 182 people in 2009.

1st issue of December 2009: Simply the best! by Dr. Iain Corness
Anna Mae Bullock’s rendition of “Simply the best” in 1991 is still a hit almost 20 years later. Australia’s rugby league adopted the song as their theme and flew her out to Australia to perform it for the football fans. For many, she simply was, and still is, the best!
If you haven’t guessed already, Anna Mae Bullock changed her name to Tina Turner, got shot of Ike, and is one of the top touring acts in the world.

1st issue of Noverber 2009: How long is a piece of string? by Dr. Iain Corness
It’s that time of year again. The end of a stressful 12 months for most people, a time of Xmas parties to try and forget, and over-indulgence on a grand scale.

2nd issue on October 2009: Charlie Chaplin and chuckling therapy by Dr. Iain Corness
We have large TVs in the lobby of the tower building of the hospital which show videos of the extremely diverse scope of treatments that can be offered by the hospital today. All very informative, other than one small matter the videos are not played with any soundtrack, and none of the doctors are Marcel Marceau.

1st issue of September 2009: Dropping dead at the supermarket by Dr. Iain Corness
My father dropped dead at a supermarket check-out, after picking up a loaf of bread for my mother. The family firmly believe that it happened when he found out how much it cost, but the real story was one of neglect, addiction and undeveloped technology.
